The airfield asphalt pavement certification program is intended to increase the quality of construction for asphalt pavement on military airfields by providing knowledge to the project team members. Effective inspection plays a vital role in ensuring that quality asphalt pavement is being constructed. Inspectors must have a basic understanding of materials and mix design, production, hauling, placing, and compacting asphalt mixtures, as well as the Quality Control (QC) and acceptance requirements specified for the project. Inspectors must work closely with others on contractor’s construction team to ensure project specifications are met and best practices are used consistently during the paving operation.
Airfield pavements are different than highway pavements for many reasons. Airfield pavements are subjected to significantly heavier loadings, higher tire pressures, and overall require a higher level of performance as compared to a highway pavement. Due to these differences, construction requirements for airfield asphalt pavement projects can be quite different than those of highway pavement projects, and consequently their quality control, specifications and materials requirements are also different. In addition, military airfield specifications can be quite different than FAA specifications. This course is designed for staff who are involved in inspection (including QC and acceptance testing and evaluation) during the placement of asphalt pavements on military airfield paving projects.
This course consists of interactive lectures related to the production and placement requirements for asphalt pavement construction on a military airfield project, including preparation prior to paving, paving and compaction, QC, acceptance, and payment. The course will provide an overall understanding of the quality requirements associated with asphalt mixture production and construction on an airfield paving project. The course is 3 full days in the classroom with the 4th day being a 3-hr certification exam in the morning.

This 3 1/2-day course will provide a detailed understanding of the production and placement requirements for asphalt pavement construction on an airfield project, including requirements for QC and acceptance. This course will provide a thorough review of the Unified Facility Guide Specifications (UFGS) Section 32 12 15.13, “Asphalt Paving for Airfields”, and will also review typical construction operations associated with asphalt airfields.
Each participant will be provided a book of the instructional materials including a hard copy of the slides and UFGS 32 12 15.13, along with Asphalt Institute’s MS 22 “Construction of Quality Asphalt Pavements” manual which will be referenced throughout the course.
The Airfield Asphalt Pavement Inspector Certification is required for personnel who are available during all project paving operations and responsible for identifying observed paving issues and ensuring these issues are addressed by the Contractor Quality Control staff.
In order to obtain a certification as an Airfield Asphalt Pavement Inspector, each participant must take the three hour exam and obtain a minimum score of 80%. Certifications are valid for four years.
Applicants must have either 1) a minimum of two years’ experience as an inspector that includes asphalt paving projects or 2) a minimum of two years of engineering-related education. Applicants must provide documentation that these requirements are met by e-mail to MBuncher@AsphaltInstitute.org within 3 days of registering for the course.
The registration fee of $1,650 per person includes the training program and all course materials. Lunch and refreshments/snacks are provided, but no lunch on exam day. Costs for housing, food and transportation are the responsibility of each participant. Payment and registration must be received no later than ten days prior to the start date of the course. Cancellations received at least ten days prior to the course start date will result in a full refund. No refunds will be provided for course cancellations after that date; however, substitutions will be accepted.
The Asphalt Institute reserves the right to cancel the course offering if registrations are below the number that makes it feasible to conduct the course. No later than ten days prior to the course start date, students will be notified only if the offering is canceled. At that time, students will be given the opportunity to roll their registration to the next scheduled offering or obtain a full refund.
The course will provide 24 Professional Development Hours.
